The Wild Atlantic Way runs the entire west coast of Ireland — something like 2,500 km of Atlantic-facing roads, headlands, and one-track lanes with nothing between you and America. A summer week wouldn't cut it. Twenty days would have to.
The ferry from Pembroke dropped into Rosslare and the route headed south-west to Kerry, two nights in Killarney before pushing north through Clare and Galway, then all the way up to Donegal. The further north the road went, the emptier it got — Downings was a stop to see my uncle Robert and Una, a proper remote corner of the country.
The return leg crossed into Northern Ireland to visit my cousin Peter, his wife Gail and their son Michael in Lawrencetown, then a night in Dublin before the Holyhead ferry and the long ride home. Around 4,500 km all in.
