October 2017. A long weekend with no plans turned into a ride to Le Mans. I crossed the Channel on Friday afternoon and stayed overnight in Rouen before heading south on Saturday morning through thick fog that didn’t lift until I was well into the Loire Valley.
The destination was the Musée des 24 Heures du Mans at the Circuit de la Sarthe — home of the famous endurance race. The museum had a brilliant collection, from early racing cars through to modern Le Mans prototypes including the iconic Porsche 917 in Martini livery. Outside, there was a track day running on the Bugatti circuit and I spent a while watching from the grandstands as Porsches and other sports cars flew past the Dunlop bridge.
After Le Mans I rode south to Tours for the night, then took a scenic route north through Normandy on Sunday, ending up in Deauville. Monday was the run home — back across the Channel and into Surbiton by late evening.
