Lille, Le Mans & Bayeux — May 2018

Six days in May 2018, riding south through France to catch the MotoGP at Le Mans. The route out took the Channel Tunnel to Calais, pushed down through Lille, then cut south to the circuit — the kind of destination that makes any detour feel justified.

The return trip earned its keep. Two nights at Le Mans, then the long way home through Normandy — Bayeux for the D-Day sites and the famous tapestry, then along the coast to Deauville before heading back to the tunnel. A short trip that covered more ground than it had any right to.

Bayeux itself was worth slowing down for. The campsite — Camping des Bords de l'Aure — sits right on the river, a short walk from the centre. In the evening I followed the Promenade de la Vallée de l'Aure along the canalised river, past old mills and wash houses with the cathedral visible above the roofline. The town was also hosting Les Fêtes Médiévales de Bayeux, the annual medieval festival — costumed jousting, market stalls, the works.
