The Blades are a civilian aerobatic display team made up of former RAF pilots flying Extra 300 aircraft in tight formation — they perform to Red Arrows standards. This is the official RAF video from their display at Sywell Aerodrome in Northamptonshire on 31 October 2009, with Sqn Ldr Andy Offer OBE leading the team.
My brother spotted a competition running in a magazine aimed at London's Chinese community, picked up in Chinatown — I entered and somehow won. They made the video for all the communities taking part, though I suspect I wasn't the most convincing representative of China. You won't see me being interviewed, but I do pop up in a few frames onboard.
The three-minute cut really shows you what low-level precision looks like. These aircraft are regularly pulling within metres of each other at display speeds. Sywell's a small grass airfield, so the scale of the manoeuvres feels particularly immediate when you're watching from the ground.
