September 2014, and I was on the ferry from Holyhead to Dublin with 11 days ahead of me. Ireland stretched out waiting — Cork, Kerry, Galway, Belfast — a loop that would eventually bring me back to where I started.
Roughly 2,000 km of Irish roads in total. Not a huge distance, but Ireland has a way of making every kilometre count.
The trip didn't end at the ferry dock. On the way home through North Wales I stopped at Zip World in Bethesda for the velocity zipwire — one of Europe's fastest, blasting down the old Penrhyn slate quarry. The following day, from Dolgellau, I rode the mountain roads down to Machynlleth and spent a couple of hours watching fast jets thread through the valleys at the Mach Loop.
